More Presentations.....

We started off a little late - just a reminder that we are watching the movie The Alamo and we will start it at 9:25 sharp so be there and be there early!

We had some great presentations by:

Gabe - Edwin Beard Budding.  Did you know he invented the lawnmower?  It was also a business that was able to succeed during war time.  Budding really inspired Gabe with his tenacity and hard work.  Gabe even had an awesome edible lawn for us to share.

Lamoni brought in his prototype from his inventor report last week.  He made his own type of Tesla coil.

Nicolas brought his iphone big prototype.  It does BIG things

Matthew brought in his prototype of a house with a lightning rod.  Cute house!

Ammon - Alfred Nobel.  Did you know the one who created the Nobel Peace Prize also invented dynamite?  Also he never allows a certain category to participate due to a personal scandal that effected him.  Ask you student what that category was.  Ammon made us all our own dynamite sticks.  It was powerful!

Preston - Bill Gates.  He was the youngest self made billionaire before the age of 30.  Gates is a brilliant man!  He also has made it possible for almost every household to have it's own personal computer.  He also does so much good for education today.  Ask your student what Prestons Dad did with Microsoft.
Nadya - Louis Braille.  We learned so much about Braille.  Did you know he was born with sight but due to an accident lost the site in both eyes?  He improved on a system the military used and helped the blind to truly see through reading.  Nadya brought a great prototype of Braille and we all got to make our own braille system and feel what reading braille would feel like.  Amazing!

Kaden - Leonardo Da Vinci.  Did you know that Da Vinci is one of the greatest inventors ever although he didn't invent many of them but was the idea behind some of our greatest inventions such as the tank, scuba suit, the car, the helicopter etc. He was much ore than just a painter. Ask your student what his greatest painting was.  Kaden brought a prototype of an invention and a message in Da Vinci's secret mirror language.  Ask your students how hard it was to solve.

We also had time to do our timecards.  2 students passed them off.  Great job Gabe and Nadya!  Timecards are DUE by this Thursday in under 10 minutes or there is NO FINAL REWARD.  Parents if you could please take the time to pass them off at home that would really help us for Thursday.  All timecards need to be put in order in 10 minutes or less for them to earn the reward.  They can do it!

We also had a final Jeopardy game that Sister DeGuzman did.  It was a blast to see how much they know and the ones that stumped them.  Not surprisingly they were highly competitive!  It was fun to see them compete and fight for the win.

The reward is we are bringing lunch and a movie in the last day of class.  We really want everyone to participate.  Look at the requirement page.  We went through it with the students in class so they should know what they still have due.  It they have everything done they earn lunch and movie.  Please vote in the comment section for what lunch your student would like. Majority rules.

Rally's Hamburgers
Wings and Things
Paco Tacos
Subway
In-N-Out
Jersey Mike's
Panda Express

The students did a great job!  It has been an amazing semester getting to know them, seeing their genius develop and watching them learn and grow.  We are truly amazed by their maturity and dedication.

Questions for presentation:

Here is what your evaluator is looking for. Please don't base your whole presentation on stating the question and answering the question. This is just a guideline but from the very beginning we did state that you must have a visual prototype, This is a full science presentation please no lecture only based presentations.

Name of Presenter

Who invented it?

Why did he/she invent it?

What need does it serve?

Presentations Galore

What a week can you believe we only have 2 more weeks to meet with one another?

This week we ran out of time but got so much accomplished. We started with our patriotic quote from Preston. He shared his take on a modern day quote. It was interesting what did you guys think about it? leave a message below. :0)

We had a presidential report from Nadya on James Buchanan. She did a fabulous job! Thank you all for your hardwork on these reports. I have learned so much.

We then started our big day of Ivention/Inventor reports off with Lamoni on Nicoli Tesla. He invented the Tesla Coil. Did you know he went a little crazy at the end of his life?
Steve Jobs was presented by Nick Johnson. Do you know who WOZ was? Jobs was an entrepreneur and he never really invented anything on his own he was the marketing wizard.
Kensington presented Thomas Edison and had a remarkable visula set up and even showed how to not do an expiereent something Edison probably new very well. Her favorite quote shared was "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work" She left the class with some yummy treats.
H.B Reese is a name the class will never forget. He made the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. Meridian set the bar high for next weeks group of reports. She gave an excellent example on how to present an inventor and their invention. Good job!!! Her research sparked a desire to make her own PB cups and I must say those were better then the original.
Ben Franklin was presented by Matthew Behymer. Lots of fun facts were shared. What a great inventor to present on.
We closed with very little time. Next week we have our final batch of reports for the year and hopefully will find the time to play our jeopardy game.

Genius Shapes History

The girls were focused, determined and quiet!
It is fun to watch each of their systems for the cards.  Yet another way to see how each students genius operates!
They were hard at work on those cards.....
Gabe won the time card race and earned a cold stone gift card!  Keep up the good work
Ammon had a great President report on Andrew Jackson.  There were A LOT of interesting facts!
Matthew also brought in his quote
Gabe had a great pledge and quote!

We started with the pledge and quote by Gabe and Matthew.  Then we moved onto time cards.  The students all need to do the time cards in under 10 minutes.  Keep practicing!

We recapped the time period between 1793 – 1860 with a matching game using their time card knowledge.
We talked about how the genius of different individuals had the power to shape and change history.  We used examples of what life would be like without certain people in it.  Hopefully the students realized the power that each individual (including themselves) has to change the world.

Below are the people we used as examples to show how the world would be different without them.  We discussed how each of them had a mission and questioned if they thought they each fulfilled their personal missions.
Abraham Lincoln
George Washington
Eli Whitney
Lewis and Clark
William Wilberforce
Cochise
Santa Ana
Brigham Young
Harriet Beecher Stowe

We also watched a short video on Justice Marshall and how he changed the Judicial Branch of the gov’t.  The legislative Branch wasn’t supposed to make laws but after Board v Brown of Education it changed the checks and balances in the government.  Those changes still effect us today.

We also discussed how Brown vs Board of Education came about and the emotions used in a case to sway a decision.  We showed a copy of a video made to duplicate the video shown in the court case.   It had a profound effect on any that saw it what was your favorite part about thanksgiving but we discussed whether the courts should focus on facts or emotions and how that simple distinction could alter our decisions.

After talking about all of the genius some leaders in history exhibited we talked about their indivisual geniuses.  We asked the following questions which would be great to ask your students again to see if they have continued to think about it.

What do you think your genius may be? How might your individual talents
affect others? Discuss the need for different genius. Why does God distribute
talents in a way that makes us so different? Discuss the need to work together to
create a whole society.

We then took a personality Test that is found in TJYC for Teens.  Have your student show you their tests.

After finishing their tests on their personal mission and genius we challenged them to really think about what their mission is here and what they need to do to prepare daily to accomplish that mission.

It was a great class!  We were impressed with how the students really pondered their mission and the examples of those with strong missions who paved the way so they have the freedom to accomplish their personal missions.

We love teaching your students!

Where is your treasure?

Wow this blog is a hit...74 comments on the last class update..AMAZ-ING!

This week we a pretty sweet class if I do say so myself. By sweet I mean lots of sugar filled treats :) We started off with our morning exercises of pledge and prayer. (*NOTE: Matthew & Gabe have this assignment next week). We spent more time then planned on the timeline cards.
Everyone is doing amazing work on their studies. Good job! We tried to see how fast we could progress in 5 minutes.
No one completed it but quite a few got close. The final cards were given today so STUDY STUDY STUDY!

We continued with a discussion on the GOLD RUSH..We didn't have time to watch a documentry so here is a brief overview to watch at home.
We discussed the scripture "For Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." (Matthew 6:21)

For our activity this week we had a Treasure hunt.  What were they searching for? They werent quite sure either but it was our version of Gold.

They got excited. We gave them a map with a clue on where they could find the treasure and off they went.

They were on the search and boy did they get treasure fever as they searched frantocally in some moments.
Some found quite a large loot and didn't share and others shared with friends. It made for an interesting conversation on what probably happened during the gold fever era. Some didn't want to share with others. We discussed the American Dream..How was it altered by the gold rush? Where do you think their allegiance was? Do people still have gold fever? Well that was answered with the activity today. Is it evil to seek for riches?

We had a presentation by Kensington on President John Adams. She did an awesome job. Her power point was very creative. The best part were her fun facts.
Everyone listened and asked questions when they had them. The kisses at the end were a nice pay off. :0)

We ended our class with a great discussion on the Trap of Gold by Louis L'Amour. Take a moment parents and ask your scholar what they enjoyed or learned from that story.

Homework this week:

  1. Watch gold rush documentary.
  2. Study time line cards
  3. Work on inventor presentation
Class Plans:
Parents we are looking into having a movie afternoon or night. possibly this Tuesday or next Sat. WE will watch the mask of Zorro.
